TOMMY’S BEDROOM door was open, so Bryan strolled in. “Should I call him?” he asked.
“Call who?” Tommy asked. He had one eye closed and the other wide open as he applied a huge blue feather eyelash. He always did his makeup at home as he hated the lighting in the dressing rooms of the two bars where he worked nights. It had been the cause of more than one amusing incident when the two of them had had to stop somewhere on the way to getting Tommy to work.
“Curtis,” he sighed.
“Who the hell is Curtis?” Tommy was blinking, looking in his dresser mirror to see whether he’d attached the feather correctly. Eyelashes were still his weak point, even after nearly two years of performing.
“Curtis!” said Bryan, exasperated. “My cowboy.”
Tommy turned to him. He looked funny with only the one huge eyelash. “Your trick from the other night? The old man?”
“He isn’t an old man! And he wasn’t a trick.”
Tommy rolled his eyes. “Sorry. I forgot about all those dates you went on before surrendering your virtue.” He shut his other eye and began to affix the second lash.
“Tommy, please. Don’t be mean. I really like him.”
“’Cause you know him so well.”
“I’m serious,” Bryan said, trying not to get mad.
Tommy looked back at him, and it was hard not to laugh. The second eyelash was only half on, and it moved strangely when he blinked. “I’m sorry.” He patted half the bench he was sitting on. “Come talk to Dixie.”
Despite himself, Bryan did.
“I’ve waited all my life to meet a man like Curtis,” he told Tommy. “And I might have fucked things up.”
“Because you were honest?”
Bryan nodded.
“So why did you tell him?”
“Because he was everything I’ve ever wanted,” Bryan said. “I had to tell him the truth. It wasn’t like he wasn’t going to find out sooner or later.”
Tommy nodded, and his eyelash fluttered.
“I didn’t mean to lie,” Bryan continued. “It just got out of control.”
Tommy continued to nod, and despite how he felt, Bryan found it was all he could do not to laugh. He’d gotten used to the fact that Tommy didn’t shave his goatee and painted it to match his bright blue wig. But that eyelash was insane. “Tommy, fix your eye.”
Tommy looked at his mirror and gasped. “Girl!” He tore off the offending lash and then worked to reapply it. Tommy was far from the Southern Belle he liked to pretend he was and longed to be. Why else would he call himself Dixie? “Sweetie, you really haven’t had much experience at this, have you? You do know it’s normal to think you’re in love the first time some man sweeps you off your feet, right?”
“I didn’t say I was in love,” Bryan said abruptly. He took a breath, calmed himself. “But damn, is it normal to have such an amazing evening with a man? To want more?”
“Normal?” Tommy shrugged. He took his eyeliner and went back to work. “I don’t know about normal. But if you are lucky, you get at least a few great adventures.
