FORESHORTENING

FORESHORTENING

Foreshortening is one of my favorite topics to discuss in class. It is rather intimidating to most students in the beginning, but it is actually pretty simple once understood. Foreshortening is anytime something comes out or moves backward and away. Students often initially think of foreshortening in exaggerated ways. An extreme example would be like the model pointing his or her finger directly at the artist. While, yes, this is most definitely an example of foreshortening, it is absolutely not the only type of it. Foreshortening happens in not so obvious ways as well. In fact, foreshortening is everywhere. Anytime one part of the figure is positioned slightly closer to the artist than another part, it is considered foreshortened. So, how is this illusion created without making the foreshortened form just look short or weird?
