Half an hour later they took a becak to the house of Amba’s uncle and aunt. Her handbag felt heavy on her lap.

“I know this is probably the best way,” Bhisma said, squeezing her hand, sounding genuinely shattered, “but we’ll meet again. If we do have to part, surely it is only temporarily. For now stay safe with your uncle and aunt. There is a house on Terban Street I can stay in. Untarto told me it’s not wise for me to stay at Bumi Tarung. The house belongs to a sympathetic doctor who is out of town, and it isn’t far from Panti Rapih Hospital, where I will perform the surgery. Who knows, you might be able to join me there.”

Amba stared at the road ahead. Soon the becak ride would end, and she probably would never see this man again. But he was back on the subject of his passion, things grave and political, explaining how hush-hush his mission was, how the identity of the patient was still unknown to him, how it was likely that the Party had involved Untarto due to his Catholic family ties. “Panti Rapih Hospital is under the bishop’s protection,” Bhisma said, “and how could a bishop say no to helping a Catholic in need?”

She thought desperately, Bhisma, please spare me the details. Do I need to have the full political picture of everything that involves you? Shouldn’t you be focusing on the fact that life—along with the complexities of our real lives—is driving us apart?

“Just as you couldn’t say no to Untarto because you love him?” she said, aware of the edge in her voice.

She didn’t know where it came from, this pettiness. But Bhisma seemed to have missed it. Instead he was gazing at her with the same remote intensity she always saw whenever he was about to convey something of importance, that chillingly self-absorbed look. In that moment she knew she could not change her mind about leaving.
