Letter from Gramain to Foucquet:
“Up to now I have been doing everything I can to make our Chinese wait here patiently, but I don’t think I am going to be able to make him stay here much longer, however much I wish to do what will please you. For seven or eight days he has been plunged into a melancholy that makes me fear for the consequences. Yesterday morning he packed up his bundle and was already outside the residence, on the point of leaving, when one of our fathers ran after him and brought him back.
“I at once sent for our interpreter, who happened to be out in the countryside and only returned at night. But this morning at eight o’clock he came to see me and I had him speak to your Chinese. As far as I can understand it, what Hu wants at any price is to rejoin you in Paris. With great difficulty I have persuaded him to stay here five or six days more, and I only got to that point by promising him that I would write to you asking, as I am now doing, that you take him back. And I told him that if, after the five or six days that I asked of him, I had received no instructions from you, I would let him go. And, no doubt about it, I will have to.…
“Give me your instructions, with all the confidence of a friend. I will try to prove to you that you have not acted wrongly in trusting me.
Gramain.”
