CHAPTER 15

CHRISTIAN

“How was Open House? I bet you have a lot of cute kiddos, don’t you?” Cooper asked.

“Yeah, they’re pretty cute,” I said smiling, then dropped my bag on the kitchen table.

I couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened. Alex, of all the places I could have run into him… school! His kid was in my class. Not to mention everything he revealed. My brain hadn’t stopped going over it since I’d run from him.

I dropped to the sofa and released a heavy sigh. I pulled my phone from my pocket to put it on silent, only to discover it had died sometime during the day. Even better. I turned it over and over in my hands as the memory of Alex’s kiss, his touch, and just being back in his arms heated my skin. I was so lost in my own thoughts I didn’t even realize Cooper had sat down beside me until he nudged me with his elbow.

“Where’d you go?” He studied my face, “I asked what you wanted for dinner, but you didn’t even hear me.”

“Oh, yeah. Just tired, I guess,” I replied, rubbing my hands over my face before pasting on a smile in an attempt to hide the chaos my brain was experiencing.

“Sandwich, or should we order a pizza from Mario’s?” Cooper swiped through the food delivery apps on his phone while waiting for my reply.

“Pizza sounds good.”

My best friend knew me better than anyone ever had. I knew I could tell him anything in the world, and he would never betray my trust. But I needed time to process all this new information before I could tell him anything.

“You sure you’re okay?” He turned and looked up at me, a concern written on his face.

“Yeah, I’m good. It’s just been a crazy two weeks getting ready to meet everyone. I’ve got some really sweet kids and high-profile parents in my class.” I rolled my shoulders, turning my neck side to side to relieve the tension. That definitely wasn’t from any of said kids of high-profile parents. Well, just the one. “I’ve just got to make sure to get more sleep.” I prayed my explanation was good enough to cover up the three-ring circus in my head.

When Cooper nodded. I let out a small sigh of relief. “Okay then, pizza is ordered, and I’m getting a beer. Want one?” He jumped off the couch and headed for our kitchen.

“Yeah, sure. But I’ll grab a shower first.”

“Cool, the pizza will be here in about half an hour.” I took that opportunity to make a run for it. I hoped the hot water would wash away some of the anxiety I was still feeling. And bring some clarity with it. Because I had no idea what I was going to do.

You’re going to stay away from him. Why did I have a feeling that would be easier said than done?
