Chapter Fourteen

Storm

Before someone goes on vacation, there are things they need to tend to. For humans, it’s feeding the animals, making sure there’s someone to care for things, turning off water and the like, emptying the washing machine. Camden sat there doing all that for me as we piled into Rayne’s car. Buck declared it more fuel efficient and invited himself along, much to my chagrin.

But as a god? I had other things to tend to. We needed to visit Vidalia and make sure she was seen to so I could slyly slip her a little of my blessing to keep her going. I feared losing her, and I knew her time was coming like I knew so many others before. The dimness in her eyes told me it was months, and it had been months for almost two years. She also wanted to see Rayne, and half the pack had it on good authority that Remmy was gatekeeping him for help with their technology. Laughing, I had to tell them to schedule with Remmy or Rayne, but to please give us some time together first.

Swinging by the pack was easy. Vidalia gave me a hug and gushed over Rayne for a few minutes, giving him a tight hug and promising him she’d be around when he came back.

“Teenie wants to see you before you head out.” Ida Maye had Rayne by the arm leading him off as I followed. The thunder in my heart rose as we walked through the lots to find her small house, knocking on the door.

Tina waltzed out, Hail in her arms fussing up a storm. She looked tired and worn.

“What’s going on?” I held out my arms to take the babe, and Tina bypassed me to push the little one into Rayne’s arms. Rayne seemed as surprised as I did, but the little one squirmed and cried before his little nose twitched. Without warning, he shifted abruptly, leaving a pile of baby clothes in Rayne’s arms. His bawling cries turned to little whimpers and stalled out, with a huff of contentment.

“Whoa.” Rayne laughed as the little pup nuzzled into the crook of his arm, kicking his little back legs until his face was buried completely.

“What do ya know?” Ida Maye smirked and Tina sagged in relief. “Told you. Omega works like a charm to calm any alpha down. Even one so small and cute.” Ida Maye scratched at Hail’s little back. The contact seemed to aggravate him into scrambling to shove his face deeper into the crook of Rayne’s arm.

“I couldn’t get him to shift or nap or anything.” Tina fanned herself and sagged against the doorframe.

The expression on Rayne’s face was a complicated one, far outside of any guesses I could make. I sensed the delight in his spirit, the joy, but also the apprehension, urgency, and fear. “Hold that little pup for a bit while our Tempeste here makes the rounds.”

Not wanting to walk away, I protested for a minute until Ida Maye dragged me off and Rayne seated himself on the porch swing.
