Chapter Fourteen

Instead of moping around the house thinking of Damon, Quinn paced, and growled with Zane on his mind. All he knew about psychopaths, and he had been deceived by one. Suddenly begging for crumbs of answers from Harris didn’t seem so bad. Harris’s toying was obvious, but Zane with his attractive face, muscular frame, and concerned gaze, had completely fooled Quinn, and the humiliation stung.

There was no amount of trudging the house or petting Mars that could calm him. He wanted the study concluded as quick as possible, and then he’d never have to return to Zane’s lair.

Quinn needed to focus on the positives. Zane had proved himself to be a psychopath, and his bruised heart had to be put aside for the study. He was a professional psychologist but had behaved like a lovestruck teenager.

Quinn shuddered, and stopped his obsessive walking. He turned to Mars, who watched him intently from the sofa. His amber tail swayed behind him, snake-like and slow.

“Turns out he was a demon, not a chameleon.”

Mars blinked, then stretched out his leg, and began licking himself.

“You,” Quinn said, pointing, “you’re who I choose to spend my weekends with…”

Quinn promised himself that he wasn’t going to spend another day moping over Damon, or Zane. When Cleo next invited him out, he was going, and he wasn’t going to turn down attention for a second time.

The week passed fast, and it wasn’t long before it was Friday and there was a knock at the office door. Quinn checked his watch, then the clock on the wall. Zane was fifteen minutes early, and rather than stroll through the door in his cocky manner, he waited outside.

Quinn climbed to his feet with a sigh and plodded to the door. He took one calming breath, before swinging it wide open.

“Bit late for politeness…”

He straightened and gawped. Mackie stood behind the door grinning brightly. He hugged a piece of paper flat to his chest, but Quinn could see the creases from where it had been scrunched up repeatedly.

“It’s good to see you,” Quinn said.

“Is it?”

“Yeah, what can I do for you?”

Mackie gestured down the corridor to the gate. “I said about how I’d been a participant, and I showed the guard the paperwork, and he let me through.”

“But you were removed from the study.”

“I know that, but it clearly says you’ll debrief me, whether I finish the study or not.”

Quinn squeezed the top of his nose and nodded. “You’re absolutely right. I’m sorry, Mackie.”

“That’s okay, you can do it now.”

Quinn turned back to the clock and swiped his hand down his face. “I’m not sure I have enough time—”

“Well, I’m here, and you’re not with anyone,” Mackie said, flapping the piece of paper.

“Okay, take a seat.”

The grin Mackie shot him was so hopeful and awed, Quinn had to glance away. Mackie sat down and tucked himself under the table. He bubbled over with happy energy and bobbed up and down as he waited for Quinn to take his seat.

“How are you, Mackie?”

“Good, really good.
