Chapter 11

Avery

Avery did her best to ignore Jacob on the other side of the room, laughing and having a good time. But as the night wore on, she constantly looked over her shoulder, watching him. Bitter envy roared through her veins whenever Professor Hudspeth touched Jacob; the sight made her stomach roll. Every time Hudspeth brushed up against her professor, Avery reached for her drink, hoping it would help ease the pain and obliterate the jealousy. When Jacob leaned over her to help Professor Hudspeth line up a shot, Avery shoved herself out of the booth, stumbling over Nat’s feet as she excused herself and hurried through the crowd to the restroom.

She stepped into the first empty stall, slammed it shut, and threw the lock just before her gorge rose and everything she ingested came flying out. Muffled “ews” and the sound of shuffling feet filled the room, then silence. She prayed the bathroom had emptied so she could puke in private, something she hadn’t done since her freshman year of college.

Avery braced a hand on the stall door and pushed herself to her feet, grimacing at the filthy bathroom floor she kneeled on. She made her way to the sink, stopping every few feet when a wave of dizziness washed over her. She rinsed out her mouth, splashed water on her face, then left the bathroom.

Halfway across the massive room, she stopped and leaned against the end of the bar, her head spinning and her stomach clenching uncomfortably. Jacob stood beside one of the pool tables, his beer held between two fingers, a smile teasing the corners of his mouth. When he turned to line up his shot, his eyes landed on Avery. He straightened, concern coloring his features. He took a step toward her, but she shook her head, turned, and pushed her way through the mass of people.

Avery eased into the booth beside Carson and forced a weak smile onto her face. It was time to go. So much for a night out with her friends. She snatched an unopened bottle of water from the middle of the table and took a sip. She patted Carson on the arm.

“Give me my purse, would you, Car? I’m gonna go.”

Before he could give it to her, Nat grabbed it and dumped it out on the table. She dug Avery’s keys out of the pile, took her car key off the ring, shoved everything back inside, and set it in front of her.

“You’re not driving,” Nat said. “You’ve had too much to drink.”

“Fine, whatever,” Avery grumbled. She slid out of the booth, her purse clutched in one hand and phone in the other. “I’ll call an Uber or Lyft.”

She threw herself out of the booth and stomped out of the bar, ignoring her friends shouting after her, desperate to get away from them, from Jacob, from everyone.

Outside, she passed the window and saw Jacob and Professor Hudspeth. The gorgeous professor had a hip propped against the table and her
