Chapter Nineteen

It had been weeks since Blair had begun this no-strings affair with Rachel, and she was enjoying their arrangement more with every moment they spent together. She’d just taken dinner out of the oven when she received a text from Rachel.

Can we reschedule tonight? I’m out with friends and might be late.

She stared at the fully cooked chicken on the counter and sighed before she messaged back. Sure, but I’m booked the next few nights, so it will have to be next week. Not an attempt to guilt her into coming over. Just the facts.

Okay came through next.

Really? Was that it? No apology or anything? She was irritated at the short notice, irritated at herself for feeling that way. She hadn’t told Rachel she was cooking, so she couldn’t blame her for that reaction. But she was still upset.

They’d been getting together for weeks without any commitment. Why had that changed for her now? Why had she fixed an elaborate dinner without even telling Rachel? She’d wanted to surprise her—make her happy—enjoy the feeling that rushed her when she saw Rachel’s reaction. What the fuck was she doing?

The drawer clanged as she jerked it open and grabbed the foil. She rolled out several large pieces before she stabbed the chicken and sliced the meat from its bones. The foil clattered with every piece she tossed onto it. She eventually abandoned the knife and tore into the carcass with her hands.

After cleaning up the massacre, she flopped onto the couch and thumbed through her schedule. The rest of her week was booked. Thursday, her second job at The Speak Easy. Friday, a birthday party. Saturday, another wedding. Sunday, a ladies’ club brunch. Rachel wasn’t coming over tonight, and it would be days before she would see her again. She breathed deeply to settle her disappointment. Might as well work on her website. She had nothing else planned tonight.

The frustration built higher as she fiddled with the page changes and nothing looked the way it should. Why hadn’t she created instructions for herself the last time Tess had shown her how to make them? More important, why hadn’t she just taken Tess up on her offer to handle the changes for her? What took Blair an hour to get right would take Tess only five minutes. She picked up the phone and called her.

Tess’s bright, cheerful, voice came through the speaker. “Hey. What’s up?”

“I’m working on my website, and every time I make a change, it looks all wonky. I can’t get it to look the way I want it to.”

“Wonky, huh?” Tess giggled. “Why don’t you just send me the changes, and I’ll update it tomorrow.”

“I want to do it tonight. I have nothing better going on.”

“Uh-oh. That doesn’t sound right. Where’s Rachel?”

“I made dinner for her, and she cancelled on me. She’s out with friends.” She could hear the irritation in her voice and was disappointed in herself.

“You made dinner for her? I thought you two were keeping it casual.
