Paul remains a superb role model for how to deal with suffering. He did not rely on his own strength nor on some secret formula for successful living. Instead, his key to success was maintaining his focus on Christ’s kingdom and the glory of God. To accomplish his vision, Paul confidently drew from God’s complete supply of spiritual resources: His Word, His Spirit, His Son, and the prayers of fellow Christians. Paul could rejoice continually at these great provisions of grace, and so can we. That is not always easy, but true joy comes through Spirit-empowered perseverance to live the Christian life. Paul again gives us the pattern: “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable” (1 Cor. 9:24–25). If we are already running to win the prize, there is no suffering, trial, or persecution that can discourage us or defeat us.
