Chapter Twelve

At the enormous entrance to what Brodie had called the Metamorphic City, two twenty-foot-tall statues stood like sentinels. They depicted proud, stoutly built dwarves, each wielding two tremendous hammers. Beneath their gaze, hundreds of dwarves passed through into what appeared to be a massive city carved from the bedrock. Peabo couldn’t believe that a place so big could exist underground.

“This place is huge!” he exclaimed.

“Bah,” said Brodie. “This is merely the outpost level, where we stage trade goods going to and coming from the aboveworld. It’s a mere village compared to the lower-level areas. Nolan told me stories of your Wild West, newly settled lands filled with dangerous engines—”

“Indians. There were Indians, not engines.”

Brodie shrugged. “Either way, this is like that—a frontier level. The topmost section of Myrkheim.”

A squad of dwarven soldiers marching in lockstep stopped in front of Peabo. Unlike the dwarves in the previous group, these men looked the part of a military unit. They meant business.

Their leader, who had a brace of daggers strapped across his chest and a pair of spiked maces holstered near his waist, took in the plainswalker and frowned. “What in all of the hells are you doing down here, plainswalker?”

Nicole answered. “Take it easy, soldier. We’re with him.” She hitched her thumb at Brodie.

The soldier turned to Brodie. “What says you, Watcher?”

“We’re just arriving, and yes, they’re both my guests.”

With a loud harrumph, the squad leader shook his head. “Get them registered and tagged immediately. We don’t need any accidents happening.” And with that he and his squad marched away.

Brodie patted Peabo on the arm. “Don’t worry, they’re just one of the local patrols keeping things civilized. You’re definitely not in the aboveworld anymore.”

“He called you ‘Watcher,’” said Peabo. “What does that mean?”

Brodie waved dismissively. “It’s just an old title. It doesn’t mean anything.”

“He also said something about being tagged?”

“Aye. I have to register the two of you with the main hall’s secretary. That’ll get you a guest armband, so you’re not mistaken for a stray ogre or other nasty.”

Peabo noted that Nicole seemed completely at ease through all of this. “Have you been down here before?” he asked her.

“Absolutely. Though I visited through Igneous City, which is below the mainland.”

As they walked down the main thoroughfare, lined with buildings that would have dwarfed the ones in the farming town where Peabo and Nicole had made their home, Peabo felt dozens of eyes staring at him. He was a freak in this place, a good two to three feet taller than everyone around him—other than Nicole.

He muttered to himself, “Now I know how Shaquille must feel.”

“What?” Nicole leaned closer, putting her hand on his shoulder.

He shook his head. “It’s nothing. I’m just very aware of how tall I am right now.”

“You and me both. But it’s okay. These people are a bit gruffer than the folks in the aboveworld, but they’re solid and reliable once you’ve earned their trust.”

“Aye, that we are,” said Brodie. “And believe me, I wouldn’t have brought you two down here if I had any concerns about your character.
