Sir William Browne

The College looked for ways to reshape its purpose, slowly expanded its intellectual programme and began to dabble again in matters of public health. It found a renewed enthusiasm for publishing and issued another edition of the Pharmacopoeia in 1788. It convened a committee to investigate epidemics and resurrected the Medical Transactions in 1782, which was greeted with rather more enthusiasm from the licentiates. Emboldened by these successes, it did not hesitate to become involved when asked to give advice by the government on quarantine and vaccination. It also began to act, with some trepidation, as the licensing and inspection body for the growing number of ‘Private Madhouses’ and for practice in midwifery.
