Chapter 13

Juliet

Argh. Why couldn’t my life be easier, or at least what it had been like before Jaxon showed up? Because right now, it was nothing like how I’d planned my last few months of senior year to go.

Especially last Monday when Jaxon and I had held hands.

That moment had come out of nowhere and grabbed my heart and almost didn’t let go. If Zoe hadn’t interrupted us, I’m a thousand percent sure we would’ve kissed. It would’ve been easy to let myself go there.

Falling wasn’t hard when you were teetering on the edge with nowhere to go but down. Just like when I was a kid and my dad would take me to the water park where I loved to sit at the top of the tallest slide. I’d dangle my legs in the rushing water, working up the nerve to push myself off. Most of the time, the kids behind me would start yelling for me to go. Once in a while, one would get tired of waiting and end up pushing me. Sometimes, that’s exactly what I needed to get going. I had a tendency to overthink things. As much as I wanted to kiss Jaxon that day, I knew the cons outweighed the pros. But, if he had made the first move, I would have jumped in—heart first.

Good thing he hadn’t.

But now things were super weird between us. I had the sneaking suspicion he was avoiding me.

It wasn’t hard to do now that Max’s stepbrother, Nolan, had taken over Jaxon’s job of playing guitar for the musical. For the past week and a half, I only saw Jaxon briefly during rehearsals when he came to drop Zoe off and pick her up. He didn’t even give me the shirt that Mimi had asked for; Zoe gave it to me instead. It was like we weren’t even friends anymore. That bugged me more than anything.

I glanced up from my locker where I was grabbing some books after lunch. Angel was at her locker next to mine, and of course, that meant her other half was right beside her. Max was so caught up in whatever she was saying, he didn’t even hear me calling him. “Earth to Max?”

Grinning, Angel placed her hand under his chin and turned his face toward mine. “Ju-Ju’s got a question for you.”

“Oh hey, Jules, what’s up?” He leaned his back against the lockers and nodded my way.

“You haven’t talked to Jaxon lately, have you?” I tried to keep my tone neutral. “I was just wondering how he’s doing.”

“Naw, I haven’t. I could if you want me to. Like, if there’s a message you want me to give him?” Max winked, not even trying to hide his hidden agenda.

“Nope, I don’t need help with anything. Especially that last bit.” I shot him a stern look in case he didn’t get my underlying message. “I don’t need you stirring up trouble for me.”

“He could do it discreetly,” Angel offered with a hopeful smile.

Max smirked and ran a hand through his dark wavy hair.
