Chapter 22
TRUDIE
The three-legged race had its own challenges. Only one pairing on our team was close to the same height, but as luck would have it, everyone wanted to keep their partner from the previous game. The whistle blew again, and Alex slid next to me, which sent tiny sparks of electricity throughout my whole body. When was that going to stop?
Sixteen teams lined up at the starting line, with each struggling to strap Velcro bands on two places around their legs.
You could hear cries of, âCome on! My thigh is at your waist. This is never going to work,â across the field, as well as, âOuch! Itâs too tight, youâre killing me.â It was inevitable when banding adults together this way. At least when we were kids, we were closer in size, so it wasnât so complicated. Alex and I were exceptionally mismatched.
âHey, little pixie, why donât I just carry you across the field and back since I obviously look like a gorilla carrying its young,â he gibed. He was not wrong. It was a ludicrous pairing and everyone around us knew it, though they didnât have it any better.
âDoes that mean I have to call you Tarzan now?â I asked coyly. Stop poking the bear!
He slipped his arm around my side with his hand landing just under my breast and I gasped. Stark memories of his alpha tendencies had me fighting for control. This was my school, my friends, and my reputation; his playfulness could jeopardize all of it.
âIâll be your Tarzan, Trudie, if youâll be my Jane,â he whispered in my ear. âWe could swing around together, and I could protect you from all those filthy male animals out there.â He growled quietly. I turned to meet his deep emerald eyes, which were turning darker. I knew what it meant when his eyes looked that way. Trust me, I didnât need any reminding.
I swallowed hard, struggling to regain my composure, and snuck a sidelong glance at my teammates, hoping they werenât watching us.
In an exasperated whisper, I replied, âAlex, stop it! Swinging through the trees? Youâre incorrigible.â I tried to walk away and almost landed on my back. I felt like an idiot forgetting that we were bound together, as his big hands scooped me up tightly against his ridiculously muscled chest.
âLooks like weâre bound together, sweetheart. Youâre not going anywhere.â He waggled his eyebrows, stoking my temper.
âYouâre loving this, arenât you?â I grunted back.
âYou know it. Now, letâs go win a race so I can have you wrap those gorgeous legs around my waist again,â he taunted devilishly.
I hated him! He always had to have the last word. And he knew that I wanted his hands all over me, but that couldnât happen again. We were working togetherâall year. This was going to be impossible. I was going to need an army supply truck of batteries to keep me sated, knowing that he wouldnât be able to give me any lessons in the bedroom. Whatâs the word for female blue balls?
The race started and we lined up in the anchor position again.
