Chapter 22

TRUDIE

The three-legged race had its own challenges. Only one pairing on our team was close to the same height, but as luck would have it, everyone wanted to keep their partner from the previous game. The whistle blew again, and Alex slid next to me, which sent tiny sparks of electricity throughout my whole body. When was that going to stop?

Sixteen teams lined up at the starting line, with each struggling to strap Velcro bands on two places around their legs.

You could hear cries of, “Come on! My thigh is at your waist. This is never going to work,” across the field, as well as, “Ouch! It’s too tight, you’re killing me.” It was inevitable when banding adults together this way. At least when we were kids, we were closer in size, so it wasn’t so complicated. Alex and I were exceptionally mismatched.

“Hey, little pixie, why don’t I just carry you across the field and back since I obviously look like a gorilla carrying its young,” he gibed. He was not wrong. It was a ludicrous pairing and everyone around us knew it, though they didn’t have it any better.

“Does that mean I have to call you Tarzan now?” I asked coyly. Stop poking the bear!

He slipped his arm around my side with his hand landing just under my breast and I gasped. Stark memories of his alpha tendencies had me fighting for control. This was my school, my friends, and my reputation; his playfulness could jeopardize all of it.

“I’ll be your Tarzan, Trudie, if you’ll be my Jane,” he whispered in my ear. “We could swing around together, and I could protect you from all those filthy male animals out there.” He growled quietly. I turned to meet his deep emerald eyes, which were turning darker. I knew what it meant when his eyes looked that way. Trust me, I didn’t need any reminding.

I swallowed hard, struggling to regain my composure, and snuck a sidelong glance at my teammates, hoping they weren’t watching us.

In an exasperated whisper, I replied, “Alex, stop it! Swinging through the trees? You’re incorrigible.” I tried to walk away and almost landed on my back. I felt like an idiot forgetting that we were bound together, as his big hands scooped me up tightly against his ridiculously muscled chest.

“Looks like we’re bound together, sweetheart. You’re not going anywhere.” He waggled his eyebrows, stoking my temper.

“You’re loving this, aren’t you?” I grunted back.

“You know it. Now, let’s go win a race so I can have you wrap those gorgeous legs around my waist again,” he taunted devilishly.

I hated him! He always had to have the last word. And he knew that I wanted his hands all over me, but that couldn’t happen again. We were working together—all year. This was going to be impossible. I was going to need an army supply truck of batteries to keep me sated, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to give me any lessons in the bedroom. What’s the word for female blue balls?

The race started and we lined up in the anchor position again.
