Chapter 7

“You seriously didn’t have sex with her?” Brynn asked as they left their hotel room to head to the pool party.

“I told you last night and already once today. No, we didn’t have sex. We almost did, but we were too drunk.”

“According to who?”

Ashton glared at her sister as she hit the elevator button. “According to Dakota. Who was exactly right. I’ve waited twenty-two years to have sex. I shouldn’t lose my virginity drunk at a party in the back of a car.”

Brynn pointed a finger at Ashton as if she was about to lecture her. “First of all, I feel personally attacked. Second of all, that’s the sweetest fucking thing I’ve ever heard. Is that really why she didn’t have sex with you?”

“It is. She told me I deserved better than that.” Ashton tried to stop the goofy grin from spreading onto her face, but it was no use. Thoughts of last night made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

“You're totally swooning,” Brynn teased. “I don’t blame you though. If a girl said that to me, I would jump her bones immediately.”

“Which kind of takes away from the point.”

Brynn shrugged. “I never claimed to be rational.”

“What are you being irrational about?” their mom asked as the elevator doors opened to the hotel lobby. Because of course her family would conveniently be waiting right by the elevator when they were having this conversation.

“Ashton was telling me how her girlfriend didn’t have sex with her last night because she didn’t want her to lose her virginity in the back of a car, and I said that would be an automatic panty dropper for me.”

Mr. Levengood threw his hands in the air and shouted behind him as he walked away. “I’ll be in the car.”

“Right behind you, Pops,” Oliver said as he followed behind.

“Dakota’s your girlfriend now?” Mrs. Levengood asked excitedly.

It was a ridiculous question, but Ashton was thankful that was the part her mom decided to focus on. “No, she’s not. I don’t even know if I’ll see her ever again after this week.”

“You mean after today?” Brynn gave her a curious look, clearly aware there was more to the story.

“Um, no. I’m actually going to visit her this week.”

“The plot thickens. Our girl may become a woman after all.”

Ashton didn’t have the chance to go back and forth with her sister because her phone vibrated with a text from Dakota. I figured I should tell you before I get to the pool… I’m bringing a date with me today.

What? Ashton wasn’t naive enough to think Dakota was her girlfriend, but she also didn’t think she would go on a date with someone else right in front of her after last night. She didn’t have much time to freak out about it because another text came through with the picture of her date. It was a little girl with dark hair pulled back into pigtails giving the camera two thumbs up.

She’s cute. Should I be jealous? Ashton texted back. Apparently, she was much smoother over text than she was in person.
