Chapter 24
24 Years Earlier
The first few months at home with Catherine were difficult and exhausting. Both Susie and her parents were feeling the strain, and although Catherine was a good baby, the constant lack of sleep and crying were an unwelcome jar to Susie’s already frayed nerves and before long she became tired and irritable.
The days and weeks flew by and Catherine thrived. Night feeds were a thing of the past, no longer essential and life gradually improved for everyone. Susie was able to establish a daily routine and she began to enjoy Catherine for the first time since returning home from hospital.
Time passed quickly and before long the day arrived for Susie to return to university to continue her studies. Rachael had been there for Susie during the early months after the birth, helping out whenever she could, and loving every moment being with Catherine.
“It’s time you started packing Susie,” Janet called up to her from the foot of the stairs. “Yes, O.K. mum, I’m just getting everything together now, ready to pack,” Susie shouted, as Janet Kruger returned to the kitchen to give Catherine her morning feed. The whole family were in agreement that Susie should return to university as soon as possible to resume her studies and that Janet would give up her part-time job at the school, to take care of Catherine whilst Susie was at university. Susie knew that all financial worries would disappear once the cheque was safe and sound in the account in the Cayman Islands, and there would be no further need, of Janet’s small income. The intention was to bank the cheque at the very earliest opportunity.
Susie packed all her belongings that she needed for the new semester at Yale. She was excited, but a little apprehensive, and she couldn’t wait to see all her friends again, with the exception of Todd. The thought of bumping into him unnerved her, but she was prepared for any eventuality, and was stronger now, and ready to face him if the need arose.
She walked quickly from the kitchen to the front door. She placed her brown leather suitcase in the hall under the large wooden dresser with its ornate over mantle mirror above. As a child Susie was amazed at the way it reflected the soft sunlight through the small leaded window in the centre of the panelled front door, creating a prism of colour around the hall. It still amazed her.
“Hi Rachael, come in. You will be glad to know I’m ready,” as Susie closed the front door behind Rachael. They returned to the kitchen together, where Janet was giving Catherine her morning feed.
“Hello Mrs Kruger. Please can I hold Catherine for a moment?” Rachael asked eagerly. Janet tried to take the bottle from Catherine, with little success! “Let me finish giving her the bottle and then you can have a cuddle Rachael,” Janet replied. “She really wants to finish it, she must be hungry. I couldn’t be so cruel!” Catherine finished her
