Sam hadn’t managed to fix the Fiesta’s wheel after Patti had to abandon it in the woods, although he had at least given it a try – largely so they wouldn’t have to pay anyone else, Patti suspected.

But asking Neil to tow it to his garage had at least given her an excuse to visit Linda.

At the Forths’ house, Angel, who managed to open the door after a long wait, said Linda was in bed. This wasn’t a good sign, in Patti’s opinion, given that it was only two o’clock in the afternoon.

‘Has she not got out, sugar, or has she just got back in?’

‘Not sure.’ Angel used all the energy in her wasted limbs to manage a shrug, and Patti wanted to congratulate her but also knew how patronising it would sound. ‘I was out with Gran.’

‘Is your mam OK, babs?’ Patti gazed down at the girl in her wheelchair, hoping for a little insight, but Angel seemed more interested in getting back to The Vampire Diaries.

‘I’ll tell her you came round.’ She conferred a nice smile on Patti that also said, And now please leave.

When Patti reminded Ethan later that he was meant to invite Davey round for his tea, the boy shook his head.

‘He won’t come,’ he said glumly. ‘He’s not talking to any of us right now.’
