PART 2
Chapter 15
Two suitcases, a backpack, and a valise. I was impressed. When I was in the army I traveled light too. A duffel bag, a copy of my orders, and a wallet stuffed with your tax dollars. I offered to drive to her apartment to pick her up, but she told me she would take a taxi to my place. I didnât argue. This is how bad relationships get off to a good start: argue about who is the most altruistic. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever known, but I wanted the arrangement to be that which I enjoyed with my college roommates. I had lived in a duplex with three other nuts, and we lived our separate lives agreeably. One of them was studying to be an engineer, one majored in botany, and one was a PE major, a jock. I later learned that he had become a real estate agent. Not much money in jocking. Lots of money in real estate. We had lost touch, but I assumed his wife had talked him into switching careers. The four of us guys had gotten along fine living in our own little academic worlds, and when we graduated we never saw each other again, although we talked occasionally on the phone. It was like the army in that sense. You lose touch with your buddies. Linda was now my buddy. The fact that we slept in the same bed did not alter the fundamental premise. She would stay in my apartment as long as it took to find an apartment of her own.
After she brought her luggage in, I became wracked with an odd kind of guilt. How much time would pass before she found out that I was living in a nest of vacancies? Would she understand the wisdom of not renting the attic or basement? But of course my dick was making all the decisions that day. This was good because it left my smaller organâthe brainâto concoct strategies, explanations, excuses, plans, lies, and all the other crap a man needs to armor himself with when he hooks up with a woman. This has to be admitted. I knew my relationship with Linda would not be like my relationship with the three party animals that I roomed with in college, but my brain was free to dash around the playing field trying to figure out how to make my moves during the unforeseen future without getting steamrollered by this babe. That is how I framed the dilemma. If she decided to move into one of the vacancies, my mind would have a whole new ball game to referee, but I would take it one careful step at a time like a member of AA, or Edward Teller.
It was eleven in the morning when she walked through the front door. Five minutes after she dropped her baggage on the floor of my living room, our clothes were draped all over the bedroom. The thrill of
