Lou Novak and his staff were each sitting and watching these events play out on television, cable, the Internet and in various reports that would come into their offices. Everyone there was still keeping a close watch on the world stage for any serious changes in governmental and military actions. But those in the know in Washington were basically sitting and waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop.

“Lou,” Jack called from his desk, “turn to the BBC Network.”

He leaned over and quickly switched over to the channel. Several English bobbies were setting up a blockade perimeter across one of their streets. Suddenly a large group of people appeared. From the awkward way they moved, you could tell that they were the undead. Most seemed to have bloody wounds on arms or necks, but not all. That painfully slow, plodding and shuffling that Lou remembered seeing from zombie movies as a kid was not what he was seeing here. While they did move in an unsteady gait, like someone who had too much to drink, most seemed capable of a stumbling, yet steady jog. They looked like someone trying to run in the wrong sized shoes.
