Chapter Fifteen

Arthur

As Porter disappeared into the crowd, I picked up my beer and leaned back in the booth. “Did that just happen?”

“I think so.” Stiles still looked at the spot where he’d last been visible. “Why do I miss him already?”

“I think that’s how it works when you’re mated. I’ve always heard that, but nothing prepared me for how it feels.” I put my arm around his shoulders and brought him closer to me. “When we were together before, I knew I cared about you, very much. I’d go so far as to say loved.”

“We never said it at the time though.” He tipped his face up to me, a furrow between his brows. “Why didn’t we?”

I set the glass down and pressed a finger to the stress wrinkle. “I don’t know, but I’d guess it just wasn’t the right time. We were both finishing school and had lots of things to do and places to go before we were ready, I guess.”

He took my hand and kissed the fingertips. “Maybe that, and maybe because if we had said it, there would have been no going back.”

“Maybe both?” I breathed in his scent and relaxed into his nearness, a feeling I hadn’t had since the last time we were together. A certain tenseness dissolved. My breathing eased. If you’d asked me before whether I was tense, I’d have said no. Not really. Oh sure, there were days, everyone had them. But in general, I thought I was fine. But so not! “And maybe something within us told us to hold out for the third for our mating. For us to be completed.”

“My otter is pretty smart,” he said, nodding. “And he says that’s it. He never sent me any kind of message to mate, to claim then.”

“Neither did my tiger, but he’s ready now.”

Stiles let his head rest on my shoulder, still toying with my hand. “But we did have fun that summer, didn’t we?”

“Mmm. So much.” I kissed the top of his head. “You were incredible.”

He laughed. “I don’t mean only in bed…but that was fantastic, since you brought it up.”

“I didn’t,” I protested.

“Okay, you alluded to it.”

“But it never led to more, until now.”

“Our omega—the catalyst.” I strained to try to make out the bar, but the crowd was too thick. “I miss him. But we already said that, didn’t we?”

“Yeah, but it’s worth saying again.” He snuggled closer, but let my hand drop to pick up his beer and take a drink. “So you said you’re just here for a short time?”

“Business yeah, but I don’t want to think about that right now.” Then to prove myself a liar, I went on to talk about it. “I have been traveling almost nonstop since I graduated.”

“Do you like that?”

“I did, for a long time, but lately it’s been wearing on me a little. The weird thing is, I was scheduled to be home—far from here—this week, before I got this assignment. And I was so annoyed!” I kissed his forehead this time.
