Chapter Fifteen
Arthur
As Porter disappeared into the crowd, I picked up my beer and leaned back in the booth. âDid that just happen?â
âI think so.â Stiles still looked at the spot where heâd last been visible. âWhy do I miss him already?â
âI think thatâs how it works when youâre mated. Iâve always heard that, but nothing prepared me for how it feels.â I put my arm around his shoulders and brought him closer to me. âWhen we were together before, I knew I cared about you, very much. Iâd go so far as to say loved.â
âWe never said it at the time though.â He tipped his face up to me, a furrow between his brows. âWhy didnât we?â
I set the glass down and pressed a finger to the stress wrinkle. âI donât know, but Iâd guess it just wasnât the right time. We were both finishing school and had lots of things to do and places to go before we were ready, I guess.â
He took my hand and kissed the fingertips. âMaybe that, and maybe because if we had said it, there would have been no going back.â
âMaybe both?â I breathed in his scent and relaxed into his nearness, a feeling I hadnât had since the last time we were together. A certain tenseness dissolved. My breathing eased. If youâd asked me before whether I was tense, Iâd have said no. Not really. Oh sure, there were days, everyone had them. But in general, I thought I was fine. But so not! âAnd maybe something within us told us to hold out for the third for our mating. For us to be completed.â
âMy otter is pretty smart,â he said, nodding. âAnd he says thatâs it. He never sent me any kind of message to mate, to claim then.â
âNeither did my tiger, but heâs ready now.â
Stiles let his head rest on my shoulder, still toying with my hand. âBut we did have fun that summer, didnât we?â
âMmm. So much.â I kissed the top of his head. âYou were incredible.â
He laughed. âI donât mean only in bedâ¦but that was fantastic, since you brought it up.â
âI didnât,â I protested.
âOkay, you alluded to it.â
âBut it never led to more, until now.â
âOur omegaâthe catalyst.â I strained to try to make out the bar, but the crowd was too thick. âI miss him. But we already said that, didnât we?â
âYeah, but itâs worth saying again.â He snuggled closer, but let my hand drop to pick up his beer and take a drink. âSo you said youâre just here for a short time?â
âBusiness yeah, but I donât want to think about that right now.â Then to prove myself a liar, I went on to talk about it. âI have been traveling almost nonstop since I graduated.â
âDo you like that?â
âI did, for a long time, but lately itâs been wearing on me a little. The weird thing is, I was scheduled to be homeâfar from hereâthis week, before I got this assignment. And I was so annoyed!â I kissed his forehead this time.
