Chapter Eighteen
Ellen
Ellen hung on tightly to Ruthâs hand as they walked along Sardinia Street.
Everything seemed so familiar, and yet strange to her.
Her stomach muscles tightened as she neared the house. She knew Ruth, too, was feeling nervous as her hand quivered a little.
Suddenly she stood still. The house was in view and a young boy had come through the front door.
âThatâs him, Ruth! Oh, Ruth, he looks so like you.â
âAnd you, mate. Donât forget yer me twin.â Ruth gave a nervous laugh. Ellen knew from old that Ruth dealt with most things by making light of them.
As they neared him, the boy glanced towards them. Ruth shocked Ellen by saying, âHello, luv. You off out, then?â
The boy grinned. âI am waiting for my friend whoâs coming to tea. Iâm not supposed to be out here really. Mother would say that I will catch my death, but I donât think I will.â
Ellen couldnât speak, but Ruth said, âYer might, itâs a bit nippy today.â
Now they were closer, the boy looked at them quizzically. âDo I know you?â
Ellen nudged Ruth, then quickly said, âNo. We . . . Weâre just visiting a house down the road. Iâm Ellen and this is Ruth. Ruthâs always chatting to strangers.â
âI think thatâs good. I like to talk, but I donât get a lot of chance.â
âOh? Donât you go to school, Christopher?â
The boy looked shocked. Ellen felt Ruthâs eyes on her.
âHow do you know my name? Who are you?â
âI â I . . . Iâm sorry . . . I shouldnât have . . .â
Ruth saved the day, though how she thought up what came out of her mouth, Ellen couldnât think.
âWe came by here sometime last year and you were getting into a car . . . Well, at least yer should have been, but you were dawdling. We heard yer mum say, âHurry up, Christopher!â Weâre sorry, me mate shouldnât have called yer by yer name. Weâll get on our way now. Have a good time with yer friend . . . Though itâs strange as weâve been past a few times and not seen yer. We thought yerâd be at school.â
The boy relaxed. âItâs all right. I donât know how you remembered me, but donât worry. You just startled me, thatâs all.â
Ellen felt relief flood through her. She held Christopherâs lovely dark eyes for a moment. She so wanted to hug him, to tell him who she really was, but knew she couldnât. Maybe when he was a lot older. âThanks. I apologize again. And maybe weâll see you again when we come by. Itâs been nice talking to you.â
âWell, I donât know if you will. I go to boarding school next year. Somewhere in the middle of England, a place called Rugby. Itâs a very well-known school.â
âOh yes, Iâve heard of it. Are you looking forward to it?â
âSort of. A bit scared too, though.â
The door to the house opened. âMaster Christopher, what are yer doing? Come on inside . . . Who are you? What are you doing here?â
âOh, weâre just passing by.
