I woke up to piss & Cristina still wasn’t home. I couldn’t get back to sleep for a long while. Eventually dozed off & had a REM sleep dream where I was walking over a cobblestone bridge, crossing a moat to a giant castle wall, the King’s castle, but it was a fun park, a carnival, a circus. Border Protectors checked my passport at the ticket gate. The Aussie flag flapped atop the turrets. No other flags.

Sniffer dogs & Protectors were waiting inside, but they were strangely swapped. The dogs were standing upright, animal confidence in uniform, holding leashes with human Protectors at the end, on all fours, sniffing, naked but for their collars. They busted Hari – I hadn’t even realised he was there, but hey, it’s a dream. They dragged him away. I avoided the crawling authorities & waded deeper into the fun park, but it was just poker machines, slots on slots on slots, electric colours scrolling like social media feeds, bright screens burning, hope but no promise.

All the rides were closed. All the rollercoasters & carousels, huge & rusted. Fish lay dead in all the garden ponds, all the water rides. We weren’t allowed to do anything & there wasn’t much to do. There was a replica Sydney Opera House. Horse races were being projected up onto the sails. I couldn’t find the exit, just more pokies, so fuck it, I sat down at More Chilli & put $50 through & lost it & put in another fiddy & I felt Cristina touch my shoulder, but when I turned around, I lost her, too.

I woke up & had to piss again & she still wasn’t home.
