Chapter Sixteen

Julia watched Dylan pull into her driveway and rushed out the door to greet her. They’d lived with each other for years, and she hadn’t realized how much she had missed her until now. She’d been living two separate lives between Elder’s Bay and Portland, and the visit was like having her worlds collide.

“You made it.” Julia wrapped her arms around Dylan and placed kisses all over her face.

“Man, isn’t that girlfriend of yours giving you enough attention?”

“Shut up, or I’ll tell you exactly how much attention she’s giving me,” Julia said.

“No thanks,” Dylan said. “Well, maybe. Let’s drink wine first.”

Julia picked Dylan’s bag up and slung it over her shoulder. “Let’s get you inside.”

The spare bedroom was on the opposite side of the cottage from the master Julia had been staying in. At first, she’d felt a little sheepish about using her aunt’s bedroom, but she had reassured her it was too nice to not enjoy while she was gone. The bathroom alone made her swoon with the large soaking tub of her dreams.

She’d started a fire in the fireplace and lit several candles around the room to make it smell warm and inviting. Julia loved this little cottage and could see herself living somewhere exactly like it someday. It was so different from their apartment in downtown Portland in all the best ways.

There were neighbors, but the house had a yard big enough to accommodate a vegetable garden on one side and a brick patio with a seating area on the other. The backyard had a massive fireplace at the edge of another patio, covered by a beautiful wooden pergola. A large table that could seat ten people sat under it. It reminded Julia of the many family dinners they’d had there when she was growing up.

“This place is amazing, Jules. You’re seriously never going to want to leave.”

“I know. It’s honestly perfect.” Julia couldn’t hide the sadness in her voice when she thought about having to abandon the place that had begun to feel like home in such a short time.

Dylan looked at her quizzically, then wrapped an arm around her shoulders and guided her toward the kitchen. “I brought you Gilda’s for dinner and the ingredients to make an old-fashioned.”

“This is exactly why I love you so much,” Julia said. She’d been craving her favorite Italian restaurant, and Dylan made the best version of her favorite drink. God, she’d missed this.

“I’m happy to supply you with all the trappings of civilization while you’re roughing it in the boondocks.”

Julia pulled plates out of the cabinet and popped the food containers in the microwave to heat them up. Friday nights at Gilda’s had been somewhat of a tradition of theirs for years, and even though eating it here wouldn’t be the same as being in the restaurant, she was excited to have a small piece of that life in Elder’s Bay.

“Here you go, my dear,” Dylan said, handing Julia her cocktail.

She took a sip and sighed. “I don’t understand how you do it, but your old-fashioned is the best I’ve ever had anywhere.
