She had two scenes and four pages in the first draft of The Man I Love: Erik met her when he moved from Geneseo to Brockport and made his fresh start in a little apartment on Apple Street. I loved Nadine and I loved Erik having a Nadine. But she had to go.
I still love her.
He moved from Geneseo in a hurry, dove straight into the new job and never completely unpacked. He didn’t hang any pictures or buy himself mugs or a bathmat. A skeleton kitchen was good enough. He made sure the windows facing the street were decently covered and hooked up the stereo and TV. The rest was just floors and walls and a drafting table.
The truly ridiculous thing was he had a cleaning woman: Nadine, a single mother struggling to earn her degree, who was woefully strapped for cash in a way that pierced his heart. He paid her to come once a week to clean this pathetic apartment. In return, Nadine mothered Erik shamelessly, despite being six years his junior. She was always giving him suggestions and admonishments on how to fix up and decorate the place. He had politely ignored them all.
“How are you ever going to get a date into bed in this dump?” she said.
“Cash,” he said, engrossed in the sports page.
She kept at him. “How many dates you been on since you came to Brockport?”
“Two,” he said.
“How many women have you slept with?”
“One.”
“Who?”
“None of your business.”
“How many times?”
“Once.”
“Where? In your car? It wasn’t here. No self-respecting woman would be caught dead here. What, did you kill her afterward?”
That made him bark with laughter. “We went to her place,” he said.
“Well?” she said, arms crossed, eyebrows raised.
“Well, what?” he said. “It was once, what else do you need to know?”
“Good looking guy like you, lives like a monk,” she muttered, furiously dusting. “What a waste. I may have to fuck you on principle.”
“I could get arrested for that,” he said.
She threw the dust rag at him. “God, even your flattery is pathetic.”
And she stormed off to vacuum.
