Chapter Twenty-three

Jody relaxed on her couch to watch the news after Nicole left. She allowed her mind to wander to the first time she’d seen Nicole and her preconceived idea of her. She reflected on how their relationship had evolved and her growing feelings for her. A niggle of worry surfaced and she didn’t push it away. If Sara had taught her anything, it was to examine her feelings and be open and honest about them. Trusting Nicole came easily, so she cautioned herself to go slow. She picked up her phone and called Ashley.

“Hi, Jody. You’re up late.”

“Nicole left, so I was watching the news. Do you have time to talk?”

“Sure. Sleep’s overrated sometimes. Nicole? As in beautiful, rich, gentle, all those other things, Nicole?”

“Yep. We’ve sort of been seeing each other.”

“Wow. What does ‘sort of’ mean?”

“Just spending time together. That’s all.” Jody paused. “And lately, doing a lot of kissing.”

“Whew. I think we may need another night out.”

“Are you and Bill planning on going to the fundraiser Saturday?”

“Yes. Do you want to ride with us again? Are you going to wear that new red dress?”

Jody chuckled. “Yes to both.”

“Great. We’ll talk more then. And, Jody?”

“Yes?”

“Be careful.”

“Thanks, Ash. I’m doing my best.” Jody put her phone on her charger and went to bed.

The next morning she stretched and allowed herself memories of Nicole’s kiss and the heat of her body when they’d snuggled on the couch. She thought back to Sara and their last intimate time together. She smiled at the memory. As nice as the memory was, she knew it would be many times more intense and explosive with Nicole. Ashley’s warning to be careful resonated with her. She wasn’t ready to take their relationship there yet. She rose and ate breakfast before heading to work. She settled at her desk and worked until noon and waved to Pete as she rushed out the door to the picnic table. Nicole stood and waved her arm toward the bench as if it were a fancy restaurant. The table was covered with various pizza boxes.

“Thank you,” she said as she sat.

Nicole sat across from her and handed her a paper plate. “It’s good to see you.” She put a piece of pizza on her plate.

“It’s good to see you, too. I talked to Ashley last night after you left. She and Bill are going to the fundraiser, so I’ll ride with them.”

“I think it’ll be packed. My brother is doing extra advertising for me.” She took a bite of pizza.

“I’m looking forward to it.” Jody finished two pieces of pizza and relaxed with her face to the sun. “We’ve lucked out with the nice weather.”

“Yes, but like I said, I have many umbrellas in case it rains.” Nicole smirked. “I like spending time with you. Rain or shine.”

“Me, too.” Jody rested her hand on Nicole’s across the table.

“I’m bringing Tiny home on Monday. I talked to Dr. Meyers this morning.”

“Great. Now the fun begins. I’ve never housebroken a puppy, but I’ve heard tales.
