Chapter Seven

Dwight immediately had to get to work.

Much as his body felt sluggish, and the urge to rest with his mate in his arms was alive and well, there was too much to do.

And the anxiety of it all that he didn’t let himself feel while Taylor was awake came crashing down on him while he grabbed his laptop out of the truck, also thankfully hidden under the seat where Taylor couldn’t grab it, and he settled himself onto the tiny table and logged into his work account.

He immediately looked up Taylor’s file, the report made by the alpha he’d run away from.

Some guy named Nate Kingly.

What sort of fucking name was that?

A quick Google search and some pictures on the man’s social media showed that Taylor wasn’t his first omega for hire.

He had so many others. None had bruises on them in the photos. In many, they were even smiling and holding nonalcoholic drinks.

Wouldn’t want to show someone sad and hurt on his feed.

It wasn’t enough to prove that the guy was abusing them, but omegas who chose to run away typically had a good reason for it.

The medical checkups for the omegas he had kept for longer than a few months showed some concerning things.

Sexual injury. One broken wrist and another fractured collarbone.

Again, all could be explained away by clumsy omegas or an overly powerful heat.

Dwight looked at Taylor, sleeping peacefully and recovering from their own heat.

Even in the thick of things, he couldn’t imagine himself fucking Taylor so hard that he needed to take him to a hospital.

He hesitated before clicking off Taylor’s file as being found and on route for return. It was too dangerous until Taylor put his bite on Dwight.

He searched several lawyers who specialized in omega transfers and matings instead.

He took down several numbers and stepped outside to make some calls.

The first two he called suggested he turn the omega in right away and worry about the paperwork while Taylor was in custody.

“He could be sent back to the alpha who bought him in the meantime.”

“That’s what he was paid for.”

Dwight hung up on them instantly, irritated.

The third lawyer he called seemed more interested in getting Dwight to come in so he could charge a few hundred per hour working over their mating paperwork, but it was the fourth that showed the most promise.

“If you want to keep him with you, and if he is your true mate, he needs to bite you as soon as possible.”

“I know.”

“If you bit him and he doesn’t bite you back, the owner of his paperwork could argue that you kidnapped and forced yourself onto him.”

Taylor already accused Dwight of doing that. He rubbed his hand down his face, feeling sweat building on the back of his neck. “What would happen to Taylor in the meantime?”

“It depends on his owner. He could go back, but if the alpha rejects him, he’d be a ward of the state again and back in the system for another purchase.”

Neither were options he wanted to entertain.
