TWENTY-THREE

DARCY

It’s always nice to receive a handful of cash after a long day’s work. But the excitement is tempered somewhat by the fact that I don’t know if I can trust the person paying me.

‘Thanks for your help today,’ Parker says with a smile. ‘Same time again tomorrow?’

‘Yeah, of course,’ I say, not wanting to reply with anything that might make Parker feel something is wrong. But there is something wrong, seriously wrong, and I’ve decided that I’m going to try and find out what it is tonight.

The normal plan for me now would be to leave Joe’s place and head back to my own apartment and, ultimately, try and get some sleep as the day winds down to a close. But I’m not going to do that. Instead, I’m going to investigate the claims that Joe made to me earlier today when we were out for a walk and he said some very unsettling things.

He was talking about Irene, Parker’s girlfriend, and how I needed to help her. He also mentioned that there was something in Parker’s basement that warranted attention. But he didn’t tell me any more, possibly because he doesn’t know much else, or maybe because he’s too afraid to utter it. But he certainly told me enough for me to know what I have to do.

‘Thank you,’ I say to him as I put the money in my purse, before turning to his father who sits in the armchair in front of the television, watching another baseball game. ‘I’ll see you tomorrow, Joe.’

Joe doesn’t turn to look at me before I leave, choosing instead to lift a hand in the air in acknowledgement, but that’s fine because I know he’s engrossed in the game. Or maybe it’s just because he’s already said enough to me today and that took a lot for him to do, so he’s reverting back to being quieter now his work is done.

‘Have a good evening,’ Parker says to me as I leave the apartment, but he has no clue what I really intend to do tonight.

As I get into the elevator and head down to ground level, not even I know the full itinerary for the rest of my day. My plan is to find a hiding spot outside this apartment building and wait to see if Parker leaves. I guess he will eventually, when his father is in bed, which could be a while, but I’m prepared to wait. When he does leave, I will follow him, tailing him all the way back to his own home and then I’ll see what is waiting for me there.

As I leave the building and find myself what seems like a perfectly good hiding place behind several very large palm tree
