THIRTY-ONE

The Ramirez family decided to show a united front for Richard and their support for Arturo and Daniel. Mercedes, Robert, and Ruth flew to Los Angeles on Sunday, October 21. Mercedes wore all black, as if she were in mourning, with large dark sunglasses on her face and a black veil on her head. Since August 31, she seemed to have aged twenty years. The lines on her face were deeper and more pronounced; she walked slowly, with obvious strain. It seemed the weight of what had happened—a world of tragedy—had come to rest on her thin shoulders, bending her over and pushing her down.

When she saw Richard, her heart rolled over at the sight of her lastborn in jail, charged with the most terrible crimes she had ever heard of. No matter what, Mercedes knew they were wrong. Her son, her Richie, who used to love to dance to the radio, could never have done the things they were saying. She felt that drugs and Satan had caused it all and were at the heart of this nightmare. People looked at her, stared, pointed, and whispered.

Richard told his mother, over the black jail phone, looking at her through thick, dirty glass, that he did not do the things he was charged with. He’d been framed. “They needed someone, and they chose me.”

No matter what, Mercedes told her son, she believed in him and supported him. She also told him he must fight the charges—that the Hernandezes would fight hard for him and he should not give up. She would pray for him. “You cannot just roll over and give up and let them take your life.”
