It was almost seven thirty when Bill arrived home from Houston, and he was just about ready to give up trying to reach Mary by phone when he heard the doorbell ring.

“I’ve got to talk to you,” Mary said, quickly brushing past him.

“I walked over so no one would see my car in your driveway.”

“What’s up?” Bill asked, surprised by her excitement.

“Oh boy, I just had my meeting with Dante, and I really upset him.”

“Well good for you, it’s about time someone upsets somebody over there.”

“Oh, my God,” Mary said, rolling her eyes and giggling out loud. “I left him stark raving mad. I’ve got so much to tell you, it’s unbelievable and you have no idea what I did to that man.”

“Perhaps not, but I’m sure he deserved everything you did, and then some.”

As Mary followed Bill into the kitchen, she explained how she challenged him on the hospital standards.

“That’s wonderful,” Bill grinned. “How can they argue with their own written standards?”

“They can’t.” Mary laughed. “But there’s so much more to tell you, I don’t know where to begin.”

Since everyone in our office had left for the day, I just closed my door and stood like a church mouse and listened.”

“Didn’t anyone even check on you?”

“No, I’m there all hours of the day and night, and I know it sounds devious, but after my disgusting meeting with Dante, I had to listen.”

As Bill searched the refrigerator for some snacks, Mary sat down on a foot stool, pressing both elbows against her knees. “Just listen to what they said,” she whispered, as if she was about to share a huge secret. “Dante told them almost everything I challenged him on, but he embellished it even more. I could hardly keep from laughing out loud. To hear him talk, you’d think I really nailed the poor little thing to a cross.”

“I bet you were far kinder than you should have been with that devious jerk.”

“But you gotta hear what the man on the white horse had to say. McGrath told them they needed to find out more about me, and if I keep it up, they’ll fire me. Agree with everything she says, but just ignore her, he said. That seemed to pacify Dante, and he finally toned down and became the same pompous ass he’s always been.”

“You didn’t expect to change his stripes, did you?” Bill laughed.

“No - but here is the juicy part,” she grinned. “Apparently the Dinosaurs have paid a well known Senator a bundle of money to look after their interests. I
