It was almost seven thirty when Bill arrived home from Houston, and he was just about ready to give up trying to reach Mary by phone when he heard the doorbell ring.
âIâve got to talk to you,â Mary said, quickly brushing past him.
âI walked over so no one would see my car in your driveway.â
âWhatâs up?â Bill asked, surprised by her excitement.
âOh boy, I just had my meeting with Dante, and I really upset him.â
âWell good for you, itâs about time someone upsets somebody over there.â
âOh, my God,â Mary said, rolling her eyes and giggling out loud. âI left him stark raving mad. Iâve got so much to tell you, itâs unbelievable and you have no idea what I did to that man.â
âPerhaps not, but Iâm sure he deserved everything you did, and then some.â
As Mary followed Bill into the kitchen, she explained how she challenged him on the hospital standards.
âThatâs wonderful,â Bill grinned. âHow can they argue with their own written standards?â
âThey canât.â Mary laughed. âBut thereâs so much more to tell you, I donât know where to begin.â
âWell, fire away. I donât think Iâve seen you this excited about your work since you moved here.â
After she told Bill about her meeting with Dante she said, âNo sooner did I leave Danteâs office than McGrath and Bakencamp met with him in the conference room, which is right next to my office. If I stand by the air duct, I can hear almost every word thatâs said in that room. Since everyone in our office had left for the day, I just closed my door and stood like a church mouse and listened.â
âDidnât anyone even check on you?â
âNo, Iâm there all hours of the day and night, and I know it sounds devious, but after my disgusting meeting with Dante, I had to listen.â
As Bill searched the refrigerator for some snacks, Mary sat down on a foot stool, pressing both elbows against her knees. âJust listen to what they said,â she whispered, as if she was about to share a huge secret. âDante told them almost everything I challenged him on, but he embellished it even more. I could hardly keep from laughing out loud. To hear him talk, youâd think I really nailed the poor little thing to a cross.â
âI bet you were far kinder than you should have been with that devious jerk.â
âBut you gotta hear what the man on the white horse had to say. McGrath told them they needed to find out more about me, and if I keep it up, theyâll fire me. Agree with everything she says, but just ignore her, he said. That seemed to pacify Dante, and he finally toned down and became the same pompous ass heâs always been.â
âYou didnât expect to change his stripes, did you?â Bill laughed.
âNo - but here is the juicy part,â she grinned. âApparently the Dinosaurs have paid a well known Senator a bundle of money to look after their interests. I
