A flame of hope surged. Maybe Ruby would talk to Poppy, get her to call the paper and retract her outburst.

I waited, but when there was no response, I decided to make coffee for when Oliver had finished in the shower. We could sit in the window seat in the living room and watch the sun set, or take our drinks up to bed and talk there. It had been ages since we’d done anything like that, and who cared if I was the one to instigate it? It had to be worth a try, to get through to Oliver.

I’d barely got the clean mugs out of the dishwasher, when I heard footfall on the stairs and Oliver strode into the kitchen, a towel around his waist, water droplets on his shoulders. ‘What’s this all about?’

‘Now what have I done?’ I aimed for levity to hide a leap of fear at his expression.

He placed a shiny orange and white flyer onto the countertop. I twisted my head to read the words: Life Insurance for the ones you love, alongside an image of a man with his arms looped around an attractive woman, supposedly his wife. Iciness spread across my chest.

‘Oliver, I swear I’ve never seen it before, I don’t—’

‘And this.’ Something else was placed down — a photo. ‘I’m seriously worried now, Nell.’

I stared in horror at the picture. It was a smaller replica of the wedding photo in the living room, which normally resided on my bedside table. No longer in its frame, it had been ripped in half, but worse than that, Oliver’s face had been scratched out.
