Chapter Six

The storm continued well into the next day, which was the day before New Year’s Eve. The beach was beginning to look exhausted, like the sand itself was giving up on the rain and wind ever stopping. The configuration of weird beach debris—from branches and kelp to bloated diapers—changed from minute to minute as the waves kept pounding the shore.

Nick and Leo went for a long run, in the rain, and Ally read her book with a cup of coffee on one couch while Bernie and Hugh did the same, each on a different couch.

Seriously, she loved these couches. She’d get rid of her bed and only have couches just like them, if she could.

When they got back Leo went upstairs and Nick changed into dry clothes before getting coffee and taking a seat next to Bernie.

“Do we have a plan?”

“We have something. I’m exhausted now.”

“Later today?”

“Up to you. But sooner would be good. He’s losing the thread on this one.”

Bernie shook his head. “He makes things more difficult than they need to be.”

“Speaking on behalf of all people who make things more difficult than they need to be,” Hugh said, “when he does get it, he will likely understand completely.”

“Which is why we’re doing school later.” Nick sipped his coffee and leaned into Bernie. “Yay, school.”

“Perhaps you should join Lucy and Hugh teaching classes, Nicky,” Bernie told him.

“Nah. Only really like doing school with you, Bern.”

Yeah, file all that under Ally had no idea what was going on, so she pretended to be totally immersed in her book and turned the pages at regular intervals, even though she wasn’t actually reading.
