I begin to understand the disease of narrative: first one thing, then another. Eventually the story reaches a point where one might like it to end (a week ago, for instance, when it was pure sex), but there are all these pages left to fill, and the narrative is forever demanding more. “And then?” it asks, “And after that?” hinting at a particular development until one runs out of excuses and gives it what it wants.

“What does it want?” asks Jimmy Wax, who loves to hear me talk about these things.

“Just change…” I say, becoming wary (who does Jimmy report to?), “event.”

“For instance?”

But is it really the story making these demands? Do I even care what happens next or only that something new continually appears to save me from the terror of boredom? When I told Charlotte not to come over the other day, it wasn’t a plan or even a thought, yet now it seems part of this incessant drive for change. Change for its own sake.

I don’t say it quite like that to Jimmy Wax, but he is smarter than he seems and gets the gist. He laughs and asks, “So how will you keep it moving?” With that the plan I’d thought of up at Mickey’s comes back to me. It is not as brilliant as I remembered, but it will work. And since Jimmy is so interested, let him be its agent.
