chapter 23
âWell, other than the fact that they have the image of Popeye on them, itâs the best I could find in my purse.â Jamie surveyed all the colorful childrenâs band-aids she had placed in different positions on his wounds. âGot them as a joke gift. Never knew when I would need them. Hmmm.â
Returning to their resort bedroom, Jamie immediately attended to McKennaâs cuts from the assailantâs long fingernails. At the pool, she had picked up the towel that the attacked woman had left on the ground and used it as a compress to stop some of his bleeding until they returned to the room. The wounds werenât deep enough, or wide enough, to require stitching, and putting a lot of band-aids on him was the first logical solution. Unfortunately, if left on the way they were, they would certainly make him look a bit odd, if not conspicuous, especially without any clothing.
âWell, they donât exactly match the rest of your current outfit, so letâs try Plan B,â Jamie decided.
âOuch.â McKenna winced as Jamie quickly pulled off one of the many band-aids she had placed on McKennaâs bare shoulders, followed by removing five more.
A dab or two or her foundation makeup hid the cuts for the most part.
âNot bad,â Jamie said out loud, while nodding to herself after her medical and cosmetic care.
âThe makeup covers them up pretty well. But be careful of water. The makeup will come off if you go skinny dipping.â
The reference to âskinny dippingâ made him smile, as did she. Through most of the time she spent cleaning up his wounds and their walk back from the pool, he had been fairly quiet. He did tell her he had a lot to share with her but needed a few minutes to get his head and strength back together. The struggle in the water, and his coming back from Neptuneâs graveyard, had left McKenna exhausted. But he was feeling better with each passing moment.
âI canât believe he got away.â
âI canât believe he almost drowned you,â Jamie responded with a slight frown.
He let out a deep sigh.
âHe was extremely strong. Actually, remarkably strong. Andâ¦â
McKenna hesitated, clearing his thoughts to make sure he had all of the âwater out of his headâ and was really prepared to say what he had to, and he did.
âHe had fangs.â
âWhat?â Jamie exclaimed.
âFangs, like in long, sharp teeth,â McKenna replied as a matter of fact, as if explaining the word to her.
âI know what fangs are. Thatâs not why I was surprised, although I am by what youâre telling me.â
She cocked her head as if it was her turn to clear her thoughts and make sure she didnât have any âwater on the brainâ to cloud what she had to say.
âJeff was attacked by a woman with fangs, too.â
âWhat?â It was now McKennaâs turn to show surprise.
Jamie repeated Tinaâs description of what she saw and then Jeffâs arrival and his defense, and explained to McKenna why she didnât follow him immediately to the altercation at the pool.
