It was an unusually bright morning in Gylodon, as if sunbeams were amplified through a lens, with no clouds to soften the glare. And just as the earthy scent of tea drifted across the village, and breakfast was soon to begin, the panic erupted. Within moments, small children sat down on the ground crying, as they wrapped their arms around their knees, rocking back and forth, while adults zipped around, moving to and fro, like ants in a colony under attack.
At first nobody knew what was happening. All at once they felt a deep agitation, like an itch they could not scratch, and it tore through their serenity with knifelike precision. Most had no idea how to process the discomfort. They’d never had to do so before. So, they squirmed. And chatted. And tried to meditate.
The problem, some determined, was a new frequency from the skies, ripping through the village consciousness cloud like a razorblade through paper. The incoming energy agitated the animals, as well, which had long grown accustomed to Gylodon’s gentle embrace, but now took to running, scurrying and standing on high alert, just like in the outside world. Even the bees panicked, colliding into one another, as their navigational instincts were rendered useless.
Anax and Dan watched as villagers ran about, and elders held impromptu meetings in the town center, glancing skyward, gesticulating wildly with their hands. The inbound energies were man-made, coming from the skies by their best estimates. The villagers were highly sensitive to any shift in energy, more so than Anax or Dan, but even the two of them noticed a subtle discomfort.
“What the hell is going on?” Dan asked, placing his hand over his stomach.
Probing his body, Anax recognized a strange pressure in his diaphragm, something both alien and disturbingly familiar—it was the feeling he used to get when he was running late on a project deadline. “I’m feeling stress. Do you feel it?”
“Yes. And I don’t like it.” Dan looked angry.
Many of the children, feeling unwell from the energies, returned to their cottages to be with their families. The thick earthen walls provided protection, offering substantial relief. Anax and Dan watched helplessly as the all-powerful Gylodonian villagers struggled to understand the predicament.
And then, all at once, the unwelcome energy ceased.
Mostly, life returned to normal for the villagers, but some people had changed, just a bit, as fear touched Gylodon for the first time, tainting the wellspring of love. The elders became more vigilant—doing whatever was necessary to maintain the balance. There was much to do.
