JOHN BULL LOCOMOTIVE

Virgil noticed Cash seemed depressed. He knew he was missing his father. Virgil had an idea that he hoped would get Cash’s mind on something else. “You still have the picture you sketched of the old locomotive?”

“Yes. I think about that train all the time.”

“So do I. Nothing normal makes any sense about that train and how it saved us.”

“I don’t speak of it with my mother, she’d think I started drinking whiskey.”

“Young man, when I think about the train it makes me want a stiff drink of whiskey.”

“I’ll bring the picture with me tomorrow if you’d like to see it again.”

“Thank you, I would like to look at it again.”

The next morning Virgil looked over Cash’s sketch of the old train. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a locomotive like this before it appeared here months ago. It has to be very old.”

“Looks nothing like the new locomotive that the railroad have now.”

“Zane’s wedding won’t be for another month. The town is quiet this time of year. What you say we take a trip to the railroad museum in Denver. We’ll show them your drawing.”

“I’ll ask my mom tonight, I’m sure she won’t mind me traveling with the sheriff.”

“I’ll let Virginia know of our plans. She’s busy helping Camille and her mother plan the wedding anyway, she won’t miss me for a few days.”

On Friday Virgil and Cash boarded their horses on the train and traveled to Denver. Arriving in Denver they stored their horses at the livery stable and rented a hotel room. The next morning they walked down to the end of town to visit the railroad museum. A man Virgil’s age gave a tour of the museum. “Sir, you’re here with your grandson?”

“Yes, sir.” Cash smiled at Virgil’s reply. “Cash, show the man your drawing.”

Mr. Jones looked at the picture Cash had drawn. “I haven’t seen a John Bull locomotive since I was a young man in New Jersey.”

“You familiar with this type of locomotive?”

“Where did you get this picture? Only place I know of one of the John Bull locomotive is back east.”

“I sketched it, sir.”

“You draw very well. Where did you see it New York or New Jersey?”

“Wichita, Kansas.”

The man rubbed his beard. “Haven’t ever been but a couple of these old locomotives this far west ever. That was fifty years ago. The John Bull locomotives were built in the 1830’s in England. A few were ordered for New York and New Jersey railroad lines. I’m told mining companies brought a couple this far west to help remove gold from their mines, when the mines became deep it was hard to remove the gold. Being a smaller locomotive, it was used to back down in the mine and haul the gold shipment out. The only problem the rails weren’t laid all the way through the west. The locomotive had cattle cars with mules. At the end of a spur line the gold would be transported by mule the rest of the trip to a major city.
