After managing to persuade Honey that skipping filming today would lead to a fate worse than death (dodgy choice of words, I know), I am glad when Honey leans back in the car and closes her eyes, avoiding any possibility of small talk. The smudge on her dress made the blood freeze in my veins â Iâm certain that whoever pushed that note under the door must have been at the party last night, and they came into close contact with Honey. The only problem is, Honey danced the night away with several different people, so the process of elimination is going to be difficult. I need something more, something concrete.
As soon as we arrive on set, I know something has happened. The air is subdued, Cynthia lounges against one of the walls, a smug look on her face, and Billy is avoiding my eye, Honeyâs eye, and that of anyone else who dares look in his direction.
âAre we late?â Honey whispers to me, as we walk on to the lot, picking up on the strange atmosphere. Jean marches towards us, her mouth set.
âHoney. Leonard wants to see you. In his trailer. Now, please.â
Honey shoots me a panicked look, her face still pale and sickly.
âGo,â I say, âIâll be there in two minutes.â I watch as Honey scurries away towards Leonardâs trailer, Jeanâs voice like needles in my hungover ears.
âWhere were you this morning, Lily? I came to your room but there was no answer.â
âI stayed with Honey in her room last night.â
Jean looks unconvinced.
âHoney had a little too much to drink, so I stayed to keep an eye on her.â The image of the dark figure running up the stairs, away from Honeyâs floor, suddenly looms bright in my mind and I have to swallow hard. Was it him? Did the guy I saw running away come back and put the note under Honeyâs door? Was he hanging around, waiting until the corridor was clear? The very idea of it â of him creeping around outside the room while Honey and I were sleeping â makes me feel nauseous.
âI should think Leonard will want to speak with you as well, Lily, after your behaviour last night.â
âAs long as he speaks to Magnus, too.â
Jean shakes her head, her mouth twisting. âWhat is your problem, Lily? Why do you insist on behaving like⦠like an animal? Is that the way women do things in London? Because in Hollywood we show respect for other people, we donât speak to them like trash.â
âWhy did you tell Honey it was normal to receive threatening letters?â I say now to Jean, ignoring her words and the pinched expression on her face.
âWhat? I neverâ¦â Jean blusters. âI just meant⦠if you want to be famous, you have to understand that not every letter you receive is going to be pleasant. Not everyone is going to love you,â she says snippily.
âDid she show you the letter she received?â
âWell no, butâ¦â Jean shrugs. âJessica handles it much better than Honey.
