“I hope soon to see you again, which will be to me, a greater comfort than all the precious jewels in the world.”

That night I broke the fever. As my temperature began to lower and the sweat began to dry up. I felt like I could breathe again as my body began to become a normal temperature. Where I had been soaked before now only beads of sweat laid on my face now. My anxiety eased and the room came back into focus. The doctor smiled over me. These were good signs. He had feared that he might disappoint his master had he failed to save me. The headache continued to rage on, but my pulse returned to a slower rhythm. The pain that had gripped my chest began to subside, and I was able to sit up in my bed for the first time in days.

I felt better. Much better. The illness seemed to pass as quickly as it had come on. I was exhausted. Still I fought the urge to sleep, but the Doctor informed me that at this stage it was perfectly safe and would actually do me a world of good. So I slept for what felt like days — falling into an exhausted sleep that completely took me over. The moment I closed my eyes I was taken off into a heavy sleep. My body finally happy to give in to rest. I did not dream or fret. I slept in a deep sleep for a whole day and night — my body doing its best to recover from the trauma of the sweat.

I woke the next day to see that father had made a full recovery and was sitting in a chair beside my bed. Mother stood at the foot, her hands clasped over her mouth. The doctor stood in the corner. They had all been watching me sleep holding their breath for the moment I would wake. They could only be sure of my having beaten the disease if I awoke with no signs of it. I sat up in my bed still feeling a little weary as my arms shook under the weight of me. The headache had seemed to start receding, allowing me to think clearly for the first time.

As everyone came into view I smiled with happiness at my family sitting around my bed in a silent vigil waiting for my recovery. It felt good to know that they cared enough to stay close by, even whilst running the risk of catching the sickness themselves. After a moment Dr Butts came over to me and ran his hand on my forehead. He breathed a sigh of relief. “She has survived it.” He announced.

My mother cried and made her way to the bed and for the first time, threw her arms around me. She had never done this before and for a moment let her joy overtake her usual coldness. I let her hold me as the Doctor’s words sunk in. I had beaten it.
