Meanwhile, having been massacred on both sea and land at Salamis, Xerxes and the Persian fleet quickly sailed back to Asia, but even still, the emperor had not abandoned his hopes for a conquest of Greece because the best of his army, under Mardonius, still remained in the field. However, the following year, in the summer of 479 BCE, the Persians faced a force of between 40,000 and 100,000 Greek infantry near the Boeotian city of Plataea. At the battle, the Greeks completely annihilated Mardonius’ force of between 100,000-300,000 men, and Mardonius himself was killed. Around the same time, what remained of the Persian fleet was destroyed off Mycale. The Persian invasion was over, and no Persian army would ever set foot on Greek soil again.
