“Let me get this straight.” Megan’s eyes are wide as she takes in my summary of the meeting after I get home. The girls are asleep upstairs. “You just gave up?”

I don’t respond.

“You could have taken the lead again, Cole. Don just needs to know you’re still passionate. He just needs some reassurance.”

“Don is in charge now.”

“You don’t even want to consult?”

“No.”

Megan rubs her forehead. “I can’t believe this.”

“It won’t affect us financially.”

She looks up at me. “I’m not worried about the money. I just feel bad for you.”

“I’ve worked crazy hours forever. It’s time to change that. I want to focus on the girls.”

“You feel guilty about the affair.”

“What?”

“It’s why you’re so obsessed with the girls. You want to make things up to Conner.”

My blood pressure soars. “I’m obsessed with the girls because they’re my nieces. I’m sorry you don’t understand that.”

I stalk into my office. After shutting the door, I pace the room. It’s another night when I’ve had enough of Megan. I need to be alone.
