There was uproar from all of Jonathan’s other men:

“We are all guilty and therefore you will have to kill us all. However Jonathan has saved us, not only winning our first battle against the Philistines but alone with Adam delivered the whole army into our hands. Saul has killed thousands but Jonathan tens of thousands. Either kill every one of us or none. The choice is yours.”

The men then lay down alongside Jonathan and soon were joined by dozens more. They all lay down and soon there were several hundreds of them. Saul knew he was caught out and held a vote.

“Who wants Jonathan to die?” No one moved.

“Who wants Jonathan spared?” All hands went up and Saul had to back down. Humiliated he stomped off in a huge rage. He realised that Jonathan had more influence and backers than he and his leadership was threatened. He hated Jonathan and his smug friends with intensity and planned to get his revenge. Mordecai slunk off to save himself from the anger of his former friends.

Jonathan and his men were untied and allowed to go free. Jonathan had brought his friends and his army salvation.

Later they met and talked late into the night about their experiences. Adam who had been recuperating joined them and he reminded Jonathan of their longs talks about religion all those years ago.

“Perhaps you were wrong to dismiss belief in God so quickly and maybe you should rethink your faith. How could we have defeated those thousands of Philistines on our own without divine intervention?”

“It will remain a mystery and we will never know the full truth”.

The news of Jonathan’s success quickly spread all over Israel and he was hailed and praised wherever he went. The story of how he and his armour bearer had defeated tens of thousands of Philistines while they were securely encamped on their high mountain was on everyone’s lips and at feasts and in the temples and indeed at every gathering in the country the story was told and repeated. The story was often exaggerated and the numbers of the enemy became hundreds of thousands.

Samuel and the high priests quickly tried to assure people that this was God’s work and His intervention and that He had caused the Philistine’s defeat by creating an earthquake and a terrible storm but this did not detract the people from their adulation for Jonathan.

When he travelled to Bethlehem the whole city rushed out of their houses just to get a glimpse of him. People wanted just to touch him or his clothes. Hundreds fell on to the ground in frenzy and worship. All the workers, shepherds and farmers left their lands and animals and rushed to join in and to catch a glimpse of Israel’s biggest celebrity. Women left their chores and brought their children to him to hope for a blessing and his divine favour. The crowd became hysterical and were completely out of control at one time threatening to trample him and his group to death.
