Bannockburn, Present

The weather had lost its short stint of warmth by late September, and Amy found herself bundled in a warm sweater with a pair of thin gloves tucked in her purse, ready for her trip to the Games and museum with Angus. She’d braided her hair down her back. Her jeans still fit, and if she appeared any larger, sweaters would hide it for some time, still. She touched her stomach. It would be obvious soon enough. It’s not like people care so much anymore, she thought, heading down the hall to the kitchen. It was a different world out there. “It’s just not a different world in my head,” she murmured to her unborn child.

Her phone rang while she cleaned her breakfast dishes. She hesitated, seeing Rob’s name on the caller ID, but hit talk.

“Hey, what’s up?” His voice came brightly from the phone.

He had no claim on her, she thought irritably, so she had no reason to feel such guilt. It was time to stop leaving pieces out. “You called just on time!” The false brightness ringing in her voice irritated her. “I’m heading out to see some Highland Games and a castle.”

He jumped on it. “How are you getting there?”

“A friend is driving.” She felt only a little guilt for toying with him, for making him ask. But it wasn’t as if they’d ever gone out. She’d never so much as kissed him.

He resisted a full second longer than she would have guessed him capable. “What friend?”

“Remember the cop at the hospital when Ni—Shawn was brought in? Angus, who knew so much about Glenmirril? He’s taking me.”

“Doesn’t the guy live up in Inverness?”

“He has a friend he visits down here. Sometimes I run into him.” She hit the speaker button and set the phone on the counter.

“He’s been to your house?”

Amy sighed, putting the bread in the breadbox. “No, Rob. We’re not seeing each other or—anything—if that’s what you’re worried about. For that matter, neither are you and I. You have no reason to quiz me.”

She could picture him swallowing and turning red, his eyes blinking hard. “I’m not quizzing you. I’m concerned, that’s all.”

She pushed the garbage can to the edge of the table with her toe, and used a cloth to brush crumbs off the table into it. “I know you better than that, Rob.”

He said nothing while she ran hot water in the sink, throwing in a dash of electric green detergent. “Can you blame me?” he finally asked. “You’re all alone. I don’t want this guy taking advantage of you.”

She plunged her arms into the soapy water. “How’s he going to do that, Rob? It’s not like I have money for him to con me out of. It’s not like he’d want to sleep with me, pregnant with another man’s child.”

“Okay, that was blunt.” Rob’s voice echoed, loud and tinny. “Ouch.”

“Well, what did you expect?” Amy snapped. “There are only so many ways to take advantage of women.” She swished a cloth over the mug, saucer, plate, and fork, and put them on the drain board.
