I sat there for a long moment, digesting everything he had just said. He was right, I did deserve something real and someone who was present, both things he was clearly unwilling to give me. Stupid, stupid, Soren. Always throwing yourself at the nearest emotionally unavailable man. Even worse this time, he didn’t even want to use you sexually. We had gone through this before, in my father’s office. He had made it clear twice now.

Even though I knew he was right on multiple accounts, I didn’t want to give him any more space to explain, any more air to breathe in the same room as me. I brushed past him, dropping the throw onto the floor in front of the door. But fairness? In what realm was he an unfair partner? I collected myself as much as I could.

“You’re right, no complications,” I said, my voice purposely clipped. I turned and left the room, shutting the door quickly behind me. I didn’t let myself fully crumble until I got to my room and closed the door behind me.

I crawled into my bed, wrapped myself in the plush comforter, and stared out the window, trying to ignore the hollow tug of sadness I felt in my chest. I had been dumped by boyfriends of years, I had been beaten by Willem, but still, this fresh wound with sharp cuts of humiliation lingered in my chest, threatening to bring tears to my eyes.
