When the newly reformed Miami was finally unveiled to the world, it consisted of the three original members—Ray Millar on drums, Des McAlea at centre-stage as front man and Stephen, to Des’ right, on bass—and three new recruits—Des O’Flaherty on guitar and vocals, Norman Clifford on sax and vocals and Noel Ryan on keyboards.
Stephen was happy to see Noel in the ranks because he was a man with whom he found he had some things in common.
‘He was from Waterford, only sixteen miles from Carrick. I always admired him as a keyboard player. He had been with the Big 8 in Las Vegas. Ironically, Noel was in the car with Tom Dunphy when Tom was killed just two days before my friends died. We always had a good laugh. We didn’t take ourselves too seriously as pop stars. Noel had a great image. He looked like a young Elvis and the girls simply adored him. Norman Clifford was a journeyman and he knew that this was a great way to raise his profile. You could not deny the man’s ability though and he would go on to make a name for himself, also with the Big 8.
Dessie O’Flaherty was a gentleman, literally, to his fingertips. He was a fine guitarist and a fabulous singer, but I think he was sometimes like a fish out of water as his real passion was for country and folk music. I always thought he was brought in as the token country artist—country music was still a religion in Ireland. Although we were a pop group, Dessie would cover songs such as The Bellamy Brothers’ ‘Let Your Love Flow’ or the many hits at the time by Glen Campbell.’
