Chapter Twenty Two
10 AM Thursday - On the way back to the Hotel
Grigor Gregory sang, don’t you see.
Now he works at CWP.
He once trained with the cow
But he hates her, and how
Something really seems fishy to me.
Octavius was seated in the flat bed of the ATV with Bearyl. Frau Schuylkill was driving and Chita was sitting in the shot gun seat up front. She was also trying to pick up on the conversation she and the Frau were having last night that had been interrupted by Bearyl’s arrival.
“Frau Schuylkill, may I call you Ilse?”
“That is my name.”
“Well, Ilse, as I was saying last night, we have a lot of similar talents that might come in handy in certain situations.”
“Perhaps, but of course, you will be returning to your publications in London and we will be commuting between Cincinnati and the Shetlands. I don’t see us having too many opportunities to work together, and of course, The Colonel and I are partners in many of Herr Bear’s activities.” (And in many of their own activities. Ah lupine romance!)
“Oh, I realize that, but sometimes a little female intuition and cunning can go a long way in managing events. For example, what’s your take on this latest murder? I wonder if Miss Felicia pushed the cow’s murderer a bit too far. I’m convinced she was in on Honoria’s demise. ‘Come with me, Madame Heifer. Let me call you a cab. While we’re waiting why don’t we step into this alleyway and get out of the cold. Slash and crash. Oh dear, maybe we don’t need that cab after all.’ And then, according to Otto, she was assigned the task of disposing of the murder weapon. A task she didn’t carry out quite as planned. That may have done for her or maybe she was trying a little blackmail. Whoever the cow’s killer is, he or she has quite a fierce temper. No weapon this time. Strangulation of a much smaller victim with a few claw slashes thrown in. Do you agree?”
“It sounds logical. It also makes it more likely that the killer is a member of the TV station staff. I wonder how Herr Maury, Otto and the Condor are progressing, if at all?”
* * *
Well, here we are still at CWP-TV. Condo, Otto and your obedient servant, Mauritius Meerkat. The police are not being very forthcoming or liberal with their agreement to let us make inquiries. We did learn that it was one of the remote crews who found Felicia. We spoke for a moment with Beatrice Beaver but between her sobbing and lisping, we didn’t get much that was helpful.
We ran into the grizzly bear who had been in the studio during Condo’s interview with Beatrice. I guess the constabulary hadn’t gotten to him yet in their inquiries. He asked Condo for another demonstration of the voice unit and pelted him with questions aboot the technology involved, most of which went right over Otto’s and my head.
