Chapter Thirteen

Of course, Garrick would focus on retribution. Brenna stared out as the muted orange rays of the sun began to set over the dark, reflective mirrors of the sea that had finally come into better view. She hugged her cloak to her body. Was that not what all men did? Died for past deeds and sacrificed themselves in the name of the dead, only to unwittingly abandon the living? She was so tired of it. Bone-weary of never looking forward. All she wanted was to seize her chance, her moment of freedom and happiness, but she seemed destined to have it slip from her grasp.

Again.

First, she’d believed Garrick would be her hope for the future. That they could secure it together and build a family and something of substance on their own. When that had faded away into nothing when he’d disappeared, and after she had grieved, she’d seized upon the idea of marrying Stephen Winters, as it would bring some security to her clan. She was beginning to understand why Moira had not wished to remarry at all after her first husband’s death and had wanted to live unburdened in a garden surrounded by her wee plants. For years all she had wanted was to be pretty and sought over enough to have suitors to choose from and make Father proud of her by achieving a suitable match that would enhance the clan’s power in the Highlands.

She’d been such a fool.

No wonder she had been viewed as useless. A suitable match was the goal of a girl in braids, not the goal of a woman who desired independence and worth.

Maybe having Garrick leave her had been a saving grace. She’d learned to sew—not well, mind you—but she could. She had learned some healing techniques and the importance of herbs. All to prove to herself and others that she was more than pretty Brenna in lovely frocks without a care in the world or a meaningful opinion in her head. That she had worth, like her siblings.

But the moment Garrick had returned she’d realised that those goals had also been a ruse to distract herself from the truth at hand. She still had no footing, no understanding of what she truly wished to be or what mark she wanted to make in this world. She was not settled in the future, working towards her goals like her sister and brother. She was tethered to nothing and could blow away, disappearing into nothing if the right wind blew her about, and it threatened to drive her mad.

They made a final turn to what appeared to be an old barn. Its high ceilings and wide shape suggested it was little more than a structure built to break the wind and protect one from the elements. As the wind ruffled the edges of her cloak against her face, casting prickles of cool snowflakes on her cheek, she was grateful to know she would not be forced to sleep out in the cold. And even more excited by the prospect of being at Blackmore tomorrow eve.
