“Listen to this. Screaming headlines in the Sunday Express, ‘Trash Pop Group Disowned by Lord Provost.’ ‘Glagow’s image as a violent city took another knock last week—from Apple, the company The Beatles launched. In its publicity for a new record, Apple describes the people of Glasgow as “the devil’s own children.” It tells of pints of red blood in the gutters of the Gorbals. The pop group who made the record are called White Trash. They originally came from Glasgow and are now handled by Apple. Yesterday, the publicity campaign was attacked by both Glasgow’s chief constable and lord provost. Said Lord Provost Donald Liddle: “The members of the group may come from Glasgow but to my mind they are not Glasgow boys anymore—they are orphans. In my opinion, this kind of publicity for publicity’s sake is despicable. If this is the way you sell a record, I can only hope it’s a flop. But ‘Trash’ is very apt.” And the Scottish Sunday Mirror headline reads, ‘City Fumes Over Pop Disc Smear,’ more of the same stuff.”
“Dynamite!”
“We probably wouldn’t have done as well if we’d tried. We’ll have to do one of those numbers again. Rolling Stone says, ‘Last word from an assistant chief constable of Glasgow, speaking in the absence of his boss, currently at an Interpol Laugh-In in Mexico, “I’ve never heard of this group and I’m very happy to be in that position of ignorance.”
“That about says it all.”
“Leave it to Rolling Stone.”

Press Office Release to UPI, AP, Reuters, PA: On behalf of The Beatles and their company, Apple Corps, their business manager Allen Klein of ABKCO Industries after discussion with The Beatles announced in New York today that all negotiations between The Beatles, Associated Television, and Northern Songs have been terminated by The Beatles. All of The Beatles and their companies intend to sell all their shares in Northern Songs to Associated Television at a price in accordance with the terms laid down by the takeover panel. John Lennon and Paul McCartney have no intention of involving themselves in any further relationship with Northern Songs or Associated Television beyond the fulfillment of their songwriting contract to February 1973. The Beatles intend to keep all their rights within their own company, Apple, which has divisions in records, music publishing, motion pictures, and television. After discussions with The Beatles’ solicitors and after taking advice of counsel, the writ served upon Northern Songs by The Beatles’ own Maclen Company will not be withdrawn and a statement of claim will be served within the next few days.
“Despite the immediate returns, even a man of Klein’s abilities and reserves of energy is only able to scratch the surface of what’s going on here. It’s going to be years before this thing will make any sense to anyone. By then, all of us will have just become the occasional brief mention tucked away
