London, Sunday, 16 February 1873

As I stood with Constable Beck and Peter near the sideboard, I glanced into the other room. Miss Wickes was in conversation with one of the brothel girls.

Suddenly, she looked in my direction.

Our gazes met. I took a sip of brandy, eyeing her over the glass. I’d been surveilling her and Miss D’Allaire all morning, even if they weren’t aware of it.

At Mrs. Gray’s house, for example. After they’d gone up the back stairs, I’d immediately gone up, too. I hadn’t taken the wooden servant stairs but rather the carpeted steps off the foyer, which allowed me to tread discreetly. Constable Beck had looked on as I went up, an inscrutable expression on his face—amusement, maybe, or had it been exasperation? No matter. I hid in the corridor outside the bedchamber, where the women were, while the whole bloody thing unfolded. I’d overheard bits and pieces of what Mrs. Gray shared with the women: a few details about Dankworth, the magnetic instrument. Who knows what they’re willing to pull? she’d said.

Now I wondered what the girl might be saying to Miss Wickes. What suspicions she, too, might be unveiling.

All of this talk about crooks and tricks. Had Miss Wickes and Miss D’Allaire put the puzzle together yet?

Had they any idea the illusionist at the Society was...me?
