7.

O sisters too, how may we do

For to preserve this day

This poor youngling for whom we sing,

"Bye bye, lully, lullay"?

"Coventry Carol," English, dating from the 16th century

Jenna balled her fists on her hips and gave Millie her powerful-attorney stare. “We have to go. You need to come with us.”

Millie sat on Jenna’s bed and curled her feet beneath her. She sent Dorrie a pleading glance, but Dorrie refused to meet her eye and studied her shoes. “Look, I know this is really hard for you to understand… I’m not sure I understand it myself, but there’s something about Carson…” She thought about telling them how the world seemed to stop when he kissed her. That argument might work on sentimental Dorrie, but it would only be fodder for Jenna’s arguments. Jenna had a gift for turning others’ words into lethal weapons. “You don’t know him,” Millie said lamely.

“And neither do you!” Jenna countered.

Millie should have seen that one coming. “But I’ll never know him if I don’t give him a chance.”

“A chance? Do you think that’s all he wants?” Jenna dropped her suitcase at Millie’s feet.

Millie couldn’t help but smile.

“Look at this place!” Jenna stomped over to the window and tapped on the pane. “This is probably the original glass!”

“It’s so cool,” Millie murmured, gazing at the wavy glass and the snowy pasture beyond.

Jenna paused, stared out the window for a moment, and then turned her back on it. “No, it’s not cool—it’s frigid! And inefficient. This whole place needs new windows—and that’s not all!” She stomped across the room and threw open the door leading to the bathroom, where a claw tub squatted on the lime green tile like a giant polar bear. “This tile has to be from the fifties!

There’s not even a shower!” Jenna waved her hand at the bathroom as if dismissing it. “Who wants to stay at a hotel without a shower?”

“It’s charming.”

Jenna pointed her finger at Millie. “You’re being charmed, as in transfixed, as in duped.” She crossed her arms. “I’m not going to stand by and watch it happen.”

“Great,” Millie said, easing off the bed.

“Great?” Confusion flashed across Jenna’s expression.

“Yeah, you finally said something I can agree with.” She padded across the room and opened the door. “You need to go.”

“Uh-uh. No way.” Jenna fold her arms and planted her feet shoulder width apart. “We’re not going without you!”

Millie shrugged. “Then you’ll have to stay.”

“For how long?” Jenna exploded.

Millie lifted a shoulder. “I don’t know…a few more days.”

“But I have to go to work!” Jenna said.

“And I have to go home,” Dorrie spoke up for the first time since the exchange began. “Judson has work, too, and Amber has school.” She gently touched Millie’s arm. “You’re a big girl. You can take care of yourself.”

“Thank you,” Millie said, giving Jenna a disappointed look.

“Jenna loves you,” Dorrie said. “She’s just trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“From getting hurt.”

Jenna nodded.

Millie put her arms around Jenna and then motioned for Dorrie to join in a group hug. “You guys are the best.
