Return of the Saint (1978) – double episode ‘The Saint and the Brave Goose’, includes Cowes powerboat races.

The Trespasser (1981) – D.H. Lawrence novel starring Alan Bates and set in Freshwater.
Inspector Wexford Series (1987-2000) – Ruth Rendall mysteries, partially filmed on the Isle of Wight.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1993) – Based on D.H. Lawrence’s novel. Director Ken Russell, starring Joely Richardson and Sean Bean, filmed at Bonchurch, Black Gang and St Lawrence.
Mrs Brown (1997) – Directed by John Madden. It depicts the relationship between Queen Victoria and John Brown, starring Dame Judi Dench and Billy Connolly. Partly filmed at Osborne House.
The English Patient (1997) – Directed by Anthony Minghella. Includes some Isle of Wight footage.
The Winslow Boy (1999) – Directed by David Mamet from the play by Terence Ratigan. Starring Nigel Hawthorne and Jeremy Northam; it is based on an incident at the Royal Naval College, Osborne. It was shot at Osborne House.
Hotel Paradiso (1999) – Director Adrian Edmondson. Starring Rik Mayall and Simon Pegg. Chaotic comedy.
Reach for the Moon (2000) – TV series set in a school. Starred Peter McInery and Linda Bellingham. Filmed at Carisbrooke High School
New Year’s Day (2001) – Youth drama by local director Suri Krishnamma.
Message to Love (2002) – Director Murray Lerner. Film footage of the 1970 Pop Festival at Afton Down, featuring Jimi Hendrix’s last filmed performance.
Amnesia (2004) – Psychological drama starring John Hannah.
Fragile (2005) – Psychological drama starring Calista Flockhart.

Ray Allen, born and resident in Ryde, wrote the first script of Some Mothers do ’Ave Em when working as a cleaner at the Regal Cinema, Shanklin.
Adrian Searle, art critic for the Guardian newspaper, writes widely about Isle of Wight history.
Elizabeth Missing Sewell, ‘Authoress, Novelist and Pioneer’, was born in Newport. When her minister father died penniless, she took on responsibility for his debts, financed by her morally uplifting books for girls.
