The crushing weight of American airpower descended on the Luftwaffe again today after a period in which oil and industrial targets had received their periodic mauling.

Today 3,000 bombers and fighters in the United States Strategic Air Forces destroyed at least fifty Nazi machines, and wrecked six factories and an unspecified number of ground bases serving the German Air Force at home…

Nearly 1,000 aircraft, all told, took off from Italian fields to attack targets in Czechoslovakia.

Vital Targets Attacked

The places attacked today were a bomber assembly plant at Wismar, a components plant at Luebeck, an assembly factory in Rostock, a research center at Rechlin, and air force stations at Anklam, Schwerin, and Neu Brandenburg near Stettin.

The Mediterranean-based bombers went to the Brnö-Líšeň factory in the Moravia area and the Brnö-Kuřim engineering works.

Tales of enemy opposition varied. Some pilots said the Germans most definitely “did not put out the welcome mat,” and others found it hard to believe that the Reich had any defenses. Flak was pretty hot over Peenemuende, from all accounts.
